2017 Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal and/or Bar Nominations Deadline
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is preparing for the next review and submission of the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal nominations to the Canadian Chancellery of Honours.
This year’s submission deadline, for medals to be presented in 2018 is Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Nominations received after that date by the Office of the Fire Commissioner will be delayed for processing and not submitted until the process for the following year begins in the fall of 2018.
Please note that the Office of the Fire Commissioner will only accept electronic submissions on the new nomination form rolled out by the Canadian Chancellery of Honours in 2015. Nominations received by our office by mail or fax and those not on the new electronic form will be returned to the nominator for proper electronic resubmission. Narratives explaining the nature of the exemplary service from each municipality or organization for which the nominee is being recognized are still required by the Alberta Awards Committee and should accompany the electronic nomination as separate email attachments.
The new electronic nomination forms for the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal are available on Her Excellency the Governor General's website. We have also provided access to this form through the Office of the Fire Commissioner’s website along with an information sheet that guides you through this new process.
Please ensure you are submitting your electronic nomination and accompanying narratives through the Office of the Fire Commissioner by email to Firecomm@gov.ab.ca. Nominations sent directly to the Chancellery will be returned to our office for the required review and recommendation by the Alberta Awards Committee.
If you have any questions regarding the completion or submission of your nomination forms, please contact Mr. Alex Martsynkevych at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling him at 1-866-421-6929.
Just a reminder that the photographs from the 2017 Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal Investiture held in Red Deer on June 11, 2017 are available here for viewing and downloading.
If your department is still awaiting receipt of any medals expected in 2017 and you have not been contacted, please advise Mr. Martsynkevych. We believe most of the problems/issues experienced last spring are now resolved and the final ones are under review. Some of last year’s outstanding nominations have been included in the upcoming cycle. The primary reason for imposing a strict deadline is to alleviate the problems from last year as significant communication and verification between this office, the Alberta Awards Committee, the Canadian Chancellery of Honours and the Royal Canadian Mint is requiring considerable time and effort.
Alberta Emergency Services Medal – 12, 22, 32 and 40 years of service
The Alberta Government initiated the Alberta Emergency Services Medal to recognize Alberta emergency services personnel who selflessly dedicated their time, talents, and, in some cases, their lives to the service of others. The medal pays tribute to outstanding full-time, part-time, and volunteer members who have committed 12, 22, 32 or 40 years of cumulative service in one or more of the eligible emergency response disciplines in Alberta.
The medal is administered by the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decorations in Ottawa. The federal, provincial, and territorial jurisdictions independently recommend eligible and deserving members of the fire service to the Chancellery. Awards are made on behalf of the Sovereign by Instruments signed by the Governor General and are announced in the Canada Gazette. Engraved medals and certificates of award are forwarded to the nominating authority for formal presentation on behalf of the Governor General. The Lieutenant Governor presents the medals to all recipients.
